The World War Two collections
A reminder of the English contribution. On its arrival in Italy, and for a large part of its stay in the territory, the US 10th Mountain Division was reinforced by the British Royal Artillery's 178th Medium Regiment. With the consistency of a battalion, the 178th was composed of three batteries of 8 Mk3 guns, each with a caliber of 5.5 inches (140 mm).
From the left, a 45° 10x80 binocular (Doppelfernrohr or Flakfernrohr) mainly used by anti-aircraft artillery (Flak) for anti-aircraft observation, a 10x50 trench telescope (Scherenfernrohr 14) model SF14Z and a theodolite (Richtkreis 31) for measuring vertical and horizontal angles in artillery fire. On the right, a MG42 on a Lafette tripod.
